My Birthday Post

In case you didn’t know, on March 24th it was my birthday!

Birthdays are a tricky thing. Depending on the year (and the day!) I’m happy or a mess about that 24th coming up. Sometimes it does hit me hard, as I always thought that at this point in my life I would have already accomplished certain things.

In any case, in the last couple of years my life goals have changed dramatically, and what I wanted to do until then I didn’t want to do anymore. I am now working towards new goals and I’m so happy about it!

So my birthday actually started at 7pm on the 23rd of March (hello, time zones!). I started receiving messages then, and I opened one of my presents a little before that.

It was coming for my parents and my sister, and I couldn’t be happier with it! I was thinking on getting a camera when our budget allowed it, but now I won’t have to! I’m super thankful and now I only have to learn how to use it to take the best pictures. I am definitely a happy woman!

Later that night, but already the 24th, my husband gave the cutest birthday card.

Also, he gave me a voucher for a 60 minute couples massage and we’ll go do some shopping too. I was always telling him that we should go get a massage together, and we’re finally doing it! 😀

After working three hours in the morning, we went to get my driver’s license (I can finally drive! LOL), eat lunch and run a couple of errands.

We had tickets to go see the Cirque du Soleil show that night, so we met with my sister & mother in law and a friend. We went also last year, but I think this year’s show was even better. I’m still amazed by how those guys can bend that much! It’s wonderful the things that one can do with the body when you’re disciplined.

There was also a guy doing a mini show with a couple of yo-yo’s. I remember that I tried to learn a couple of tricks with the yo-yo’s when I was a kid, but never really managed to.

We were going to go have dinner afterwards, but my father in law wasn’t feeling ok so we will just go celebrate sometime soon.

It was a great day. I got things done and I celebrated with close people. What else can I ask for?

Birthdays are good for you. The more you have the longer you live.

Random Facts About Me!

I already made a post with 12 random fact about me, but here we go with 11 more! haha

  1. I am pretty much addicted to chocolate. If I decline some, chances are that something is wrong.
  2. I am slightly OCD. Sometimes. Depending on the day I have to make sure that everything is organized/displayed on a certain way. I think I’ve gotten better over the years, but it’s still something that drives my husband crazy sometimes haha
  3. I dreamed about coming to the USA since I was a kid. I always said that I would come when I was 18, although it took me a few more years.
  4. I haven’t been home for almost 2 years. Thank you, Skype, for existing!
  5. When I was a kid I barely watched TV, but I read a lot. I discovered the Disney stories not through the movies, but through the books.
  6. When I went to college I always had to study from clean notes. I would sometimes copy my notes 2-3 times to make sure that they were clean (hello, OCD! LOL)
  7. I am not a party person. Many times I just prefer to stay home or go to a bar where you can actually have a conversation. And I feel like I can’t stay up until that late anymore.
  8. I am not a morning person, but I’m slowly trying to be better at that.
  9. My wedding was a reaaaaaaaally intimate celebration. It was cute, although many important people were missing.
  10. I love to drive.
  11. I am an easy person to give gifts to. Just bring me some chocolates and a teddy bear and I’ll be happy haha

Questions from AwesomeLife1980

  2. If you want a(nother) baby, what will their name be? A few years ago I thought of the name Chloé and I really love it, but my husband and I still have to talk about that haha

  4. Worst of 2015? Not being able to travel home

  9. What is your favorite family tradition? Just getting all together during Christmas Holidays and eat, laugh and be happy.

In the beginning of 2012, due to an important and unexpected (kind of) change in my life, I decided that I was going to leave Spain and go somewhere else. Around that time I got a job (after so many months of search, I was so excited I could have cried) and for the next year I focused on finishing my master’s degree so I could actually go wherever I wanted.

When 2013 came I decided that I wasn’t going to wait anymore and started to do look for the information that I needed, while I was determined to finish the master that spring.

After a little of research I decided that I was going to try to go to Australia, and if that didn’t work, I would try to come to the States. I fell in love with Brisbane and I could already see myself lying in the beach of the Gold Coast and living in that amazing city, and I didn’t really care (or thought that much) about how far I was going to be from my family and friends.

Where I was, where I ended up. Atlanta - Brisbane

When I did a little more research and found some stories of different people having done that, I understood that it was going to be difficult to get the required visa, as Spain didn’t have the Working Holiday Visa with Australia and getting a work visa was going to be mission impossible, to say the least. Of course, a few months after I got to the US they sign the deal for that visa… although I can’t say that I regret coming here!

Many young (and not that young) people were choosing a student visa, which allows you to work part time while going to classes. Some of them chose English courses, but you could choose other things too. It was very interesting to me, but it was way more expensive than I thought and I didn’t have that kind of money (some guy did a quote of what he thought he would spend in the visa, the classes, living… and it was about €18,000 – $20,500).

Not gonna lie. That was a little harsh to accept. When you have in your mind everything planned (yeah, I’m a little dreamer here) and you can imagine yourself living in the new city it’s not easy to just erase all that and start from scratch.

On the other hand, since I was a kid I always wanted to come live to the US, as I thought it was really cool (as seen in movies) so I started again all the process, now focus on how to get a visa to come to the US.

Atlanta from Piedmont Park

I read a lot of blogs, websites and forums on people that had come to work here. Not wanting to spend my money on (super) expensive classes I was focused on finding tips on how to get a job. Just in case you don’t know, it’s freaking difficult. Fortunately, while sending my CV to a bunch of companies and receiving (sometimes) rejection emails, I sent yet another CV for an offer in Chicago.

I don’t think I’ll be able to forget that moment. I sent the email, then I went to take a nap. When I woke up I checked my email and I had an answer, it was a company from the Netherlands that brings people to work in the US. I was the happiest girl just because of the chance to talk with them!

The first offer was to work in a hotel in New Orleans, starting in October. Unfortunately, as I was missing some paperwork I couldn’t fit that date, so they offered me Atlanta instead, starting January 2014.

Now I remember the process a little in a blurry. I was more than happy that they took care of all the paperwork and they told me everything that I needed to do, because bureaucracy can make anyone scream.

Downtown and Midtown Atlanta from Georgia Tech

So 601 days ago around 9pm I landed in Atlanta with a couple of suitcases full of clothes, hopes, dreams and fears. I remember waking up the next morning and thinking if I was crazy for doing this. I knew English, but I couldn’t understand people sometimes when they were talking to me and, what’s worst, I didn’t seem to be able to put a couple of words together and make a simple phrase.

Beginnings are tough, but I met some amazing people that made the transition way easier and helped me a lot during the following weeks. I couldn’t be more grateful.

Are you thinking of going to live to another city, state, country or even continent? I would 100% recommend you to do it. If you do and it’s all you expected (or more), you will live amazing experiences. If you don’t like it you can always come back or go somewhere else. But if you don’t go because you’re scared to do so you might regret it your whole life. Which option do you choose?

First Time Tag

First Time Tag

I was just going through the YouTube channels that I’m subscribed to and I saw Jazmine Garcia’s first time tag video. It’s an idea that I’ve had in my mind for a while, so I just took a pen and wrote down some ideas (aka all the questions) that she was asked. If you want to know anything else, just let me know in the comments and I’ll answer it!

So… let’s get to it!

  • First tweet

Here you can see how original I am… LOL It was on 2009/09/11 at 11:44am and it said “lalala”. I guess I was trying it to be like a test tweet or something haha

  • First person you subscribed to on YouTube

No idea. But I guess it was Zoella… I didn’t really subscribed to anyone until recently, just because I wasn’t using YouTube as I could have been.

  • First Facebook profile picture

Absolutely no clue. *Goes to check* Apparently I was into Tinkerbell at that time. I have to say I didn’t like Facebook in the beginning and it took me some time to actually use it. I uploaded that picture on February 2012. I think I had some other picture before that, but if it included my ex… Well, those pictures are not there anymore.

  • Do you still talk with your first love?

Not really. I have spoken with him a couple of times, but just that.

  • First alcoholic drink

I think it was Malibu + pineapple juice.

  • First job

It was in a retail clothing shop, for 6 months. I learnt a lot and it wasn’t bad.

  • First car

I was using my mom’s car for a while, a Kia Rio, but when I was 21 I wanted my own, so I bought a pretty old Renault Clio. It was almost 12 years old, but I had an accident and I crashed it. It didn’t last me even a month. I had to go back to using my mom’s car for a while, and then she got another one so we didn’t have to share (weird work schedules).

First car - Renault Clio

  • First person that texted you today

My mom sent me a message around 6am EST, when they got to the airport (I’m writing this on Tuesday).

  • First grade teacher

She was a b… not a nice woman called Ana García, I believe. She was pretty mean sometimes and used to hit some kids. Yeah… She hit me once. Not nice, lady!

  • First place you went by plane

I flew Madrid-Barcelona for a project with a classmate. It was in 2011, I believe.

  • First best friend. Do you still talk?

Her name was Tania and no, we haven’t talked in more than 10 years.

  • First sleepover

I don’t even remember! Besides family, I guess it was a birthday party of one of my friends. Not sure if I was still in school or I was already in high school.

  • First thing you did this morning

Go to the bathroom! Haha and then go have breakfast.

  • First concert you went to

Backstreet Boys! That’s the first one that I paid for, at least! Before that, Jarabe de Palo (Spanish group) gave a concert in the beach in Laredo (Spain), and I went. Maybe some others too, but can’t remember.

  • First broken bone

I’ve never broken any bones. I broke two teeth when I was 11, though…

  • First piercing

I pierced my ears on my 12th birthday (the regular piercings)

  • First foreign country you went to

France. I’ve been several times and I lived there for 5 months in 2008-2009

First Time France

  • First movie

No idea. Maybe some Disney movie?

  • First detention

I’ve never been detained.

  • First roommate

That would have to be my sister. We shared room until I was like 16, when my family moved from a 300,000 people city to a town with only 1,000 people… Yeah, that was hard for me.

  • If one of your wishes was to become true, what would it be?

My mission in this life is to be happy, so that would be my wish!

  • First sport you played

When I was little I wasn’t a fan of sports, actually. I started doing aerobic when I went to high school, though, and I really loved it!

  • First thing you do when you get home

Take off my shoes! I love walking barefoot at home.

  • First kiss

It was at school when I was like 10. We were playing a game, and later that boy became my “boyfriend” for a couple of weeks or so haha.

And that’s it for today! Again, if you have any question or you want to know anything that I didn’t mention, just leave it below so I can answer!
